Maria Yuryevna Sharapova is a Russian professional tennis player. She held the world number one title at the age of 18 on August 22, 2005. She’s won 35 singles titles and five Grand slam titles and ranks third in the women’s list of active players, just behind the Williams sisters. Sharapova is known for her aggressive play and power, especially with her use of the reverse forehand.
Sharapova was born on April 19, 1987, in Nyagan, Russian SFSR to Yuri and Yelena Sharapova. She was given her first tennis racquet at the age of four; she and her father would then practice regularly at the local park. She enrolled in a professional tennis academy at the age of nine under the management of IMG and won her first title at the age of 13 at the Eddie Herr International Junior Tennis Championships in the Girls’ under-16 division.
