A Personal Photolog: Julius Erving “Dr J” from Childhood to Today
If you would ask basketball enthusiasts on who the best dunker in basketball is, the name Julius Erving would surely be one of the top answers. Before Dominique Wilkins, Michael Jordan and Vince Carter wowed the world with their spectacular dunks, Erving was the barometer of high-flying dunks in the NBA. More popularly known as “Dr. J”, Erving created an art of his own in executing the dunk, as only big men closed to the hoop commonly used this basketball move before him. Who could forget how Erving glided over the free throw line for a slam dunk, a move that is still being used in dunk contests today.
While he was known for his spectacular dunks, Dr. J was also a great scorer in his prime, ranking seventh in the all-time scoring list of NBA and ABA. He was a 16-time All-Star, winning the NBA Most Valuable Player in 1981 and leading the 76ers to an NBA championship in 1983. Let’s take a look at the legendary career of Julius Erving through a collection of photos from his childhood until today.
