Patricia Lee Smith or Patti Smith is an American singer, songwriter, and poet. She was dubbed the “punk poet laureate” due to the fusion of poetry and rock in her songs. She became an influential punk rock icon in 1975 thanks to her debut album Horses. Born in Chicago on December 30, 1946, she had a strict religious upbringing, but focused more on art, poetry, and, music; saying that organized religion was too confining. Then in 1975, she formed the Patti Smith Group. The band signed a record deal and recorded their first album in the same year. Aside from being a musician, she is a feminist and activist; she even wrote protest songs in 2006 in London. In 2016, she went on semi-retirement from music, but continues to perform, write and read poetry. She was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2007, was named a Commander of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French Ministry of Culture in 2005, and was an awardee of the 2011 Polar Music Prize.
